Class: definition, examples and benefits for PIM

Group of attributes.

What is a class in the PIM

A class is a logical grouping of attributes shared by a set of products within a PIM Product Information Management). It allows product data to be structured and organized in a consistent manner, based on their common characteristics.

In a PIM, classes are used to standardize product information management. For example, a "Shoes" class may include attributes such as size, material, color, or sole type, while a "Appliances" class will group attributes such as power, energy consumption, or dimensions. This organization facilitates data enrichment, maintenance, and distribution to various sales channels.

The main advantage of classes is their ability to simplify product data management and ensure consistency. By grouping similar products into the same class, marketing and e-commerce teams can work more efficiently: they avoid redundancies, reduce errors, and speed up time to market. Classes are also essential for automating workflows, particularly when integrating with marketplaces, ERPs, or DAM solutions.
